A large majority of superannuation policies include an optional cover of lump sum disability and death insurance. If total and permanent disablement cover is elected, lump sum benefits may be payable to people who suffer partial or total permanent impairment or injury. Many people are not aware that they may claim compensation from their superannuation fund. If you have elected to include death or total or permanent disablement insurance in your superannuation and you are no longer able to perform all of the duties of your usual occupation as a result of injury or illness, you may be able to claim a lump sum benefit for your partial or total permanent disablement in addition to other compensation to which you may be entitled to claim.
To make this kind of claim, you do not have to be unfit for all work. All that is required is that you are no longer able to perform your usual work or other work within your education or skill set.
